This doesnt make sense to me. I am no programmer so maybe there is something here I dont understand, but how would having a third of their code stolen have any effect on the release of the game unless they never backed their shit up. They said themselves that whoever stole it cant do anything with it, so why would it effect the release date?

Usually when something is leaked like this was, it seems that they tend to release the product earlier than previously announced so that people will buy the real thing instead of downloading a crappy version of it. I know this is usually the case with music, and software is quite different I would assume, but it still doesnt make much sense to me.

i have a theory to the affect that 1/3 of the code to a program is just enough to cause some major problems, and not enough to where someone could re-create hl2 and distribute it under another name.

their resoning behind the delay is to re-write a lot of the code to secure the rest of the hl2 engine, as well as prevent potential hack-creators to do what they do.

however my theory is along the lines that they have already delayed the game and something drastic had to happen to have an excuse to delay the game even further.

perhaps it just wasn't ready yet, .. or they couldn't deliver what they said they could just yet .. so they came up with a way to buy them more time.
